Basic Information of Phogat Sisters
The Phogat sisters are six sisters from Haryana, India, all of whom are professional wrestlers. In order of their date of births, they are: Geeta, Babita, Ritu, Vinesh, Priyanka and Sangita.
While Geeta, Babita, Ritu and Sangita are daughters of former wrestler and coach Mahavir Singh Phogat, Vinesh and Priyanka were brought up by Mahavir after their father, who is the brother of Mahavir, was killed in a dispute.
Mahavir trained all six of them in wrestling in their home village of Balali in Bhiwani district.
Achievements of Phogat Sisters
Three of the Phogat sisters Geeta, Babita and Vinesh are gold medalists in different weight categories at the Commonwealth Games, while Ritu has won gold medal at the National Championships.
Priyanka and Sangita have won medals at age-level international championships.
Geeta Phogat (born 15 December 1988) is a freestyle wrestler who won India’s first ever gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games, in 2010. She is also the first-ever Indian woman wrestler to have qualified for the Olympics.
Babita Kumari (born November 20, 1989) is an Indian female wrestler, who won a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She also won a bronze medal at the 2012 World Wrestling Championships, and won the gold medal in 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Vinesh Phogat (born 25 August 1994) is an Indian wrestler who comes from a successful background of wrestling with her cousins Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, both international wrestlers and Commonwealth Games medallists as well.
Mahavir Singh Phogat
Mahavir Singh Phogat is an Indian amateur wrestler and senior Olympics coach. Phogat was awarded the Dronacharya Award by the Government of India.
